24 Hours in Athens: What to See

Greece is a top European destination for architecture lovers, famous for its mythological stories and stunning landscapes. Whether you like history, food, sport or just chilling on a beach, Greece can offer all of this and at very reasonable prices. Most travellers will land in Athens, a very interesting capital. So, what to do in Athens in 24 hours?

1) Stroll around the city

Athens is quite an impressive city, mixing old architecture with a busy city life. Get to experience the hustle and bustle having a stroll in the city centre: go through Monastiraki, Psyri, which are the quarters surrounding the Acropolis. Bring a souvenir back from the little shops (buy a souvenir to take back from the little shops) and street markets, then go up to the Acropolis to enjoy the view over the city.

2) Visit the Acropolis

Not to be missed, the Acropolis of Athens is the symbol of Greece; you’ve probably seen it in the famous animated film Hercules, or read about it in numerous epic poems such as the Iliad

The entrance fee to the Acropolis gives access to the whole site, the Parthenon and the amphitheatre. Discover an ancient civilization, the massive columns and think about how all of this could have been built by men hundreds of years ago with no machinery to help them! Really impressive!

3) Have a Greek culinary experience

After having walked for a while you will start feeling the hunger, have a break and taste the delicious Greek wonders: moussaka, tzatsiki, gyros, you have to try everything!

Most restaurants have reasonable prices and the quality is here! If you are on a budget try the Gyros, a pita sandwich filled with meat and crudities, filling, cheap and delicious!

4) Look for Street Art

Athens is so unpredictable in the sense that it mixes ancient architecture and modern art, for example it is very common to see a temple at the corner of a street and see a street painting close by, how cool is that! Grab your camera and go street art hunting.

I only stayed for two days in Athens, if you have more time to explore I would advise to explore the beach side which is probably very cool.

After Athens why not go to the Cyclades?!
