Top 5 of Best Getaway Escapes from London

Everyone in the United Kingdom (and in many countries on Earth) is now in lockdown but the day will come… we will eventually be able to go out! When this happens, here are 5 getaway escapes from London, all within one hour and a half in distance:

1- Cambridge

Cambridge is to me the loveliest “trendy” city in the United Kingdom, famous for its renowned university, which is the second oldest university in the UK after Oxford! Cambridge has the most beautiful architecture, and its cobbled streets host plenty of cute cafés and shops.

The city is small enough to be visited on foot within a day. The best way to visit the city is to take a punting tour along the river Cam (in the spring/summer season of course). A punt is a small boat made out of wood and manoeuvred with a long wooden pole, similar to a Venetian gondola! Most chauffeurs will guide the tour around the city and present the university buildings etc. I really liked it, especially if the weather is warm!

2- Whistable

Whistable is a small seaside town located in South East of England, not too far from Canterbury. The town is famous for its Native Oysters, the city has a small harbour and the economy is based upon fishing. If you are an Oyster fan you have to taste them, they are very delicious!

The inner city is quite small and there isn’t much to do, but the walk from the station to the port is nice, you can then have a stroll around the bay, just be aware Whistable does not have a sandy beach, it’s an authentic city with the kind of small city vibe, tasting some oysters and enjoying a walk in the sunshine. Quite the opposite of London if you need a break from the hustle and bustle!

3- Margate

Margate is also a seaside town, located just after Whistable, only a couple of miles away. The atmosphere is quite different though, it is a much bigger city, there is a huge amusement park attracting many families. It is quite busy in the summer as everyone goes there to enjoy the sea.

There is a large sandy beach, so you can go there to sunbathe. There is an amazing bar called Ziggy’s Rooftop bar. The rooftop has a direct view over the beach and the music theme is Caribbean/Jamaican, such a chilled vibe!

4- Oxford

Oxford probably hosts the most famous University in the world as it is the oldest of all the Anglophone countries, and most recently the filming location of the Harry Potter saga. Christchurch College, which is the biggest building of the University is not to be missed, that is where you will see the Great Hall, alias Hogwarts’ dining room. The city centre is quite small, nice to do some shopping and wander around without rushing.

If you want to indulge yourself why not spend a night at Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons and enjoy a two Michelin-starred dinner, created by Chef Raymond Blanc?

5- Brighton

Brighton is the inevitable seaside town to visit when it’s becoming warmer. Brighton is known for its impressive Pier, a popular attraction for amusement games and its Royal Pavilion. The architect John Nash created it in an Indian Revival style in the 18th century, you would almost feel like you are in India if you do not pay attention to the surroundings, a must-see! Brighton is also very famous for its Lanes, which are narrow streets creating a kind of maze in the city.

If you need a longer break why not head to the calm of North Wales?!
